HOW TO PREPARE ENGLISH MODULE FOR NDA EXAM
HOW TO PREPARE ENGLISH MODULE FOR NDA EXAM
Paper 2 is a General
Ability Test. It spans 2.5 hours or 150 minutes and it consists of 150
questions and is worth a total of 600 marks. The General Ability Test is
divided into 2 parts namely the English section and General Knowledge (GK).
·
The English section of the GAT (General Ability Test) carries a
maximum of 200 marks and typically consists of 50 questions worth 4 marks each.
There is a negative marking in this section. 1/3rd of the marks assigned (1.33
marks) to the question will be deducted for every wrong answer.
·
Candidates are expected to score a minimum of 25% in each
subject in the written exam and clear the overall cutoff (cutoff can be
anywhere between 340 and 352 based on previous year cutoffs) to qualify for the
SSB interview. However, this doesn’t guarantee a place on the merit list so,
maximizing your scores in each subject and an overall score is very important.
·
Here’s a breakdown of the topic-wise weightage of questions
asked in the English section of the GAT paper
Vocabulary based questions (Antonyms - 5 ques, Synonyms - 5 ques and Idioms
& Phrases/one-word substitution - 5 ques) - 15 questions of easy to
moderate difficulty
Spot the errors - 5 hard questions
Cloze comprehension - 5 moderate level questions
Reading comprehension - 10 easy to moderate level questions
Fill in the blanks - 10 questions of easy to moderate difficulty
Para jumble/ordering the sentences - 5 questions of moderate difficulty
2. Based on the topic
wise weightage and exam trend over the last few years, identify and capitalize
on the subjects/topics (that carry a high weightage or high scoring subjects)
that you are strong in. In case you are weak in areas that carry very little
weightage then you can either cover it at the very end or skip it (only if you
are sure of qualifying for the next level) in case you are short on time.
3. Eat the live frog
first! There is no point in spending time-solving problems and revising
concepts from topics that you are already good at. Spend more time and
resources on your weaknesses (especially on the ones that carry a lot of
weightage). Ensure conceptual clarity (don’t try to memorize formulas rather
try to understand them) and PRACTISE, PRACTISE & PRACTISE… till you are
sure that you’ll never go wrong on that topic. It helps to solve questions from
previous year question papers after learning concepts from each topic. This
will boost your confidence.
4. Be thorough with
the frequently asked or most repeated vocabulary based questions. A few of the
commonly asked antonyms are as follows:
Adhere, Amalgamate,
Aloof, Emancipate, Adulteration, Eminent, Amplify, Exasperate, Autonomous,
Dishelve, Dwindle, Aptitude, Complacency, Erratic, Bland, Bane, Boycott,
Chaste, Cognizance, Cynical, Boisterous, Enmity, Astute, Equanimity, Feasible,
Ambiguous, Differentiate, Devoid, Eschew
A few of the commonly
asked synonyms are as follows:
Dull, Angry, Anger,
Calm, Eager, Fear, Moody, Love, Dark, Crooked, Scared, Disfavor, Pleased,
Perilous, etc
5. Be wary of the
marking scheme - While it is important to capitalize on high scoring topics,
you needn’t go overboard and attempt every question. There is a negative marking
so you may end up losing marks unnecessarily.
6. Attempt the easy
questions first and save the difficult or time-consuming questions for the very
end. Make educated guesses only when you are able to narrow the answer to one
of two choices.
